After the Star in a Bra shoots we were seriously pining after the delicious snacks that the lovely Elisa from Happy Skin Kitchen rustled up for us and because of this we just HAD to get a recipe and share it with you. So if you like chocolatey (check), crunchy (check) and uber tasty (check) treats then you are in the right place because we’re going to share this super easy and incredibly satisfying recipe with you. Oh and as if that wasn’t quite enough…this bars are HEALTHY. Yes you heard right. They’re packed with nutrients and vitamins so you’re doing your body good as well as just your mouth. #WINNING.

IMG_0920

Have a read of Elisa’s blog post and recipe below…

“These must be the best sweets I have ever made! They are so incredibly fudgy, chocolatey and wonderfully decadent without being sickly sweet.

The buckwheat groats also add a really nice crunch and the dates give them a subtle caramel flavour.

Apart from being so delicious and satisfying they are also a powerhouse of goodness. Buckwheat (not to be confused with normal wheat) aside from being naturally gluten free is also packed with minerals like manganese, copper and magnesium and it’s an excellent source of fibre. To keep your skin healthy glowing I have used ground almonds, rich in vitamin E which helps maintain the collagen level in your skin and pumpkin seeds which are a great source of zinc, proven to help healing acne and keep skin spot free.

These bars are ideal for a sweet snack on the go as they are totally portable, I love having one after a work out (they are also high in protein) or when the 4 pm slump hits. They are also a definite crowd pleaser, I have made them few times for office birthdays and most importantly for the gorgeous ladies of Star in a Bra and every time they have proven to be a total winner!

Here’s how to make them:

Ingredients: makes about 12-14 bars depending on the size

  • ¾ of a cup of ground almond
  • ½  cup of raisins
  • 1 cup of buckwheat groats
  • 2 cups of pitted medjool dates
  • 4 tablespoon of raw cacao powder
  • 1 cup of pumpkin seeds
  • 3 tablespoon of melted coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

For topping:

  • A handful of pumpkin seeds
  • A handful of goji berries

Method:

Start by preheating the oven at 180 degrees Celsius.

Spread the buckwheat grouts into a baking tray and roast them in the oven for about 20 minutes.  After 10 minutes shake them around so they all get evenly toasted. Take them out when they start to turn golden brown. Leave them on one side.

In a food processor place the pumpkin seeds and blitz until they are fully ground. Add the ground almond and raw cacao powder and blitz for few seconds. Add the pitted dates, the melted coconut oil and the cinnamon and blitz again until you have a sticky and smooth dough.

Transfer the mixture into a  bowl and add the toasted buckwheat and the raisin. Combine all the ingredients together. The dough will be quite sticky so I personally find easier to use my hand to mix everything together.

Cover a baking tin with some parchment paper and spread the mixture evenly. Sprinkle with pumpkin seeds and goji berries and press them gently onto the dough with your fingers.

Place them tin in the fridge for at least 2 hours. Remove from the fridge and cut into slices and enjoy! Store them in air tight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.”

Elisa Bars

Wow. Wow. Wow. Could that be any easier?! And 2 weeks in the fridge?! That has made our day… we’ll be whipping up a batch every week at this rate!

So if you like the look of these delicious bars then give them a go and tweet us a picture @CurvyKate, or have a read of our ‘What the Star in a Bra girls ate‘ blog to see more delicious treats from Elisa @HappySkinKitchen.

The Half-Cup bra is the height of sexy within the naughty lingerie world however it is a garment that should be approached with caution and to be honest, if you’re DD+ then you should probably avoid it completely, mainly for the following reasons…

#TheNewSexy Group Image

No we thought not but yet it seems once again that Facebook are banning adverts with what seems to be a ‘one rule for one, another rule for others’ system.  Remember this story we covered on the blog recently here.

Personally we love the latest Scantilly campaign imagery. We received hundreds of positive comments from women around the world that did too, such as this.

So when we were told..

Rules

The reason our Ad was blocked…

We were a little gobsmacked but then when 3 different adverts were all stopped – angry Scantilly came out.

However, we thought it must be a mistake and responded with the reasons why this image is so important and why we wanted to spread the message.

“There is still such a lack of diversity in the media and we wanted to share this image to challenge social ‘norms’. #TheNewSexy calls for women of all shapes, backgrounds, looks and sizes to be represented in the media and looks to redefine how society views the word ‘sexy’.”

Obviously Facebook had other ideas.

Not only did we violate ‘ad guidelines’ with our group shot but also with the image of the beautiful trans model Effie.

effie not boosted

And this was the final straw as this fun blog post was never even considered…

half cup

Yes, we agree, these images are sexy but we’re damn proud of that. They show that sexy isn’t just one thing, it differs from person to person, is inside and out and is totally in the eye of the beholder. Why should anyone else tell us what sexy is? If you feel it – rock it.

So, we did a bit of research with a few peeps in the office to see the type of ads they we were receiving from other brands. The following all pass the Facebook ads test, not sexy at all (??):

Black set Red set

And although we were told the Scantilly Images promote ‘Sexual acts’ (don’t ever be sexual – how awful), this Durex advert is, of course fine. Durex would NEVER promote sexual acts.

Durex

So we’re a bit baffled by it all and have appealed, without reply. For the moment, we can’t spread #TheNewSexy message by Facebook advertisements as all the images we’d like to use are seen to be ‘Sensitive in nature and typically evoke a negative reaction.’

Hmmm…not sure our fans agree.

What do you think of the new Scantilly campaign – too much for Facebook or does Facebook need to update their image processing system?

Tweet us @dearscantilly and let us know your thoughts!

How Diversity Won.

So you may have seen our recent spat with Facebook over the ads we were trying to place regarding Scantilly’s #TheNewSexy campaign. A diverse range of hot women, all spreading an inspirational and empowering message – what could possibly go wrong?

To recap – we had placed adverts promoting the full group shot:

Scantilly_Group

and the gorgeous Effie’s story:

effie not boosted2

We also looked at promoting a fun content piece about our divine half cup bras:

half cup

Sadly Facebook decided the ads could not be approved for the following reasons. Read the full details here.

Rules

We of course objected to the reasons above, appealed, then waited. Then followed radio silence. The team banging our heads against our computers. Tumbleweed obvs. More silence. Then finally we thought, let’s do something about this. These images are not hurtful but celebrate a message of diversity, strength and beauty. As you know, Scantilly is ‘Fearless Lingerie for DD to HH cups’ – so we thought, let’s be fearless. If Facebook don’t listen, we need to make them as this message is important and how many others messages are currently being stopped by their Advertising Policies.

So let’s start by saying, as usual our fans have been absolutely awesome.  You guys have spread the word, shared posts and rallied support for the campaign…and you know what. It worked. Today Facebook have replied to the team, with this reply.

Reply2

Although we understand Facebook have made mistakes like this previously, we hope if we keep standing up for what we believe in and stand together, slowly they will review their policies, police what needs to be policed and share messages that do good.

A huge thank you again to everyone who talked, shouted and shared the piece – you’ve helped a little more body positivity be in the world today!

Thanks also to Cosmo, Yahoo and the Daily Star for covering the story.

Huge love from all at Scantilly and Curvy Kate xx

These are the babes that made it through to the Star in a Bra final 10…

This year’s Star in a Bra competition has been a little different to previous years in that we have already met our gorgeous final 10 at the #SIABLive auditions. Usually the public narrow down a Top 30 (chosen by us) to a Top 10 and then these gorgeous girls come along to a photo-shoot where we get to know each and every one of them.

However this year has been different….This time Curvy Kate and Bridge Models had the tough job of picking 35 finalists out of 2000 entrants. They were then invited to come along to a make-over and photo-shoot where they could show-off their curvy figures and confident personalities. Of all the beautiful girls who came the top 10 had to be selected. It was a really difficult job, all the girls were so lovely and each had something unique to offer, however only 10 could progress in the competition, and they were….

Why do I want to be the next Star in a Bra?

I want to be the next Star in a Bra because I’ve always wanted to be a professional model, however, being a naturally curvy girl there has not always been such acceptance for women like me in the industry. But the industry is changing. #BodyConfidence #Plussize is in! and it’s growing in popularity and familiarity. Nevertheless, I don’t want the increase of body acceptance to be a hashtag fad. There are plus size supermodels empowering the industry, such as Tess Holiday, Ashley Graham, Olivia Campbell, I want to help lead the movement that plus size is here to stay. I want, when you think of professional models, who helped women become more confident with their reflection in the mirror, I want you to think of Danielle Ashley. The Star in a Bra competition could not be a more perfect platform, to model for Curvy Kate and Bridge Modelling agency, who promote body confidence and are brands that represent women like me.

Have you always been body confident?

I’m sure everyone has felt unhappy with their body at least once before. Up until the Curvy Convention that feeling for me was every day I’m 5ft 10 and according to the NHS obese. I let myself fall into a form of depression, for many years I let that be my reason why I wouldn’t pursue anything I wanted to do. No, I’m not going to go with you girls to Ibiza. No, i’m not going to enter that talent competition even though I love to sing. Please only take a picture of me from the shoulders up.

My father was a theatre manager, travelling the world, always on tour he made an abundance of friends. At my father’s wake a lot of whom were invited. I was talking with one of the guests in my grandmother’s house about if I were ever interested in acting, the ‘advice’ he gave me: “You’re a beautiful girl but you’re clearly a stone or two overweight, lose that and you can do anything.”.

The acting industry is not at times a far cry as shallow as the fashion industry. 11 years ago he was probably right. I was an active girl, at the plusher end of healthy, I went to ballet classes for ten years, swimming club, tennis competitions, but that was the first time in my life, I had ever been uncomfortable with my body. Unfortunately, His ‘advice’ stayed with me for years. I cried to my mum about it who told the man of for his indecency, but she could tell it affected me.

The old saying ‘whats on the inside is what matters most’ well that is what my mum reiterated to me and it is very true. I trained at John Robert Powers Acting school for 3 years in theatre and television. I also went to Summer schemes at the Lyric Theatre, where I also performed. I joined the drama after school club and I got an A* for drama at GCSE. If I wanted to pursue acting I put myself in a pretty good position to do just that despite the advice which tarnished a great part of my confidence.

Danielle 5

What am I most proud of?

My mum. The strongest, kindest most determined woman I know. She came to London quite young at quite a controversial time for black people and women. She worked hard, had a successful career in theatre acting as well as featuring in TV shows such as ‘Carry On Girls’. She’s taught me my mind is the most important part of me. She is now a college teacher and I continue to learn from her each day. I’d like to say she did a good job raising me too and I’m proud to be her daughter and have her as my role model.

Have you ever modelled before?

I briefly mentioned earlier that I was selected to model at the Curvy Convention earlier this year. At first I was afraid, I was petrified when I saw what lingerie they chose for me to wear. On a catwalk, in front of people and photographers. I had never walked a catwalk before, but the Curvy Con team chose the models based on our potential and talent, not experience. We had a few weeks of rehearsals with a great choreographer including some catwalk training. The other girls, some of whom are experienced plus sized models, were so friendly. On the day, seeing the other girls with real bodies looking great in their outfits, made me really look in the mirror and see my body in a way I hadn’t before. As well as all the compliments I received, and the audience applauding at me, it encouraged me to embrace my size 16 curves and own that catwalk, including the lingerie! Funnily enough the week prior I was in Greece and didn’t want to be in a bikini on the beach. The experience gave me so much more than some free clothes, (although I’m not complaining about that) it was the day that gave me the confidence to see my body is beautiful.

What makes me feel most confident?

A combination of, but not necessarily all at once: my face after a good night’s sleep, my hair after I’ve styled it.  Matching underwear with a bra that I trust will keep them still as I run for my bus. An outfit which shows my waist, my makeup (if I’m wearing) when my wings and eyebrows match. Having the evidence to prove my point in a debate/argument, that cheeky glass before a night out. Trusting in my abilities, being prepared and knowing there is only one Danielle Ashley.

Why did you enter Star in a Bra?

It was very last minute when I actually put my application through, literally within the last hour of the deadline closing. I saw the advertisements on Instagram weeks prior but I thought…maybe next year, one step at a time Danielle. It wasn’t until a friend I made at Curvy Con said just go for it, I took a quick full length body picture in my bedroom and thought I have nothing to lose. It was the most incredible feeling when I received the email to say I had made the semi-finals. I felt one step closer to becoming the Danielle I want to be.

What did you enjoy about the photoshoot?

Free advertising for Curvy Kate here but I honestly got to wear the best fitting bras I have ever worn. I went to the photoshoot having been measured as a 36F, but found out I am a 32HH. Some of the bras were so sexy and they let us keep the lingerie we wore for the shoot. The photographer was very kind and praising which helped me feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera in the Curvy K sets. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

What message would you like others to know about you?

It took me a long time to accept I will not look like the women in magazines, so like a glass half full I changed my perspective and realised it’s the women in the magazines who need to change. There needs to be more diversity. That is something I truly believe in and looking back on it now, letting my body stop me from doing the things I want to do and could have done, was a glorified excuse. Changing my perspective was not easy, I’ve spent most of my life not really loving myself. I know I’m far from perfect but there is still only one me and one thing I’ve learnt is; hating your body will never get you as far as loving it will. And now I feel unstoppable. You have one life, do not waste any more time letting your insecurities or other people’s destructive criticisms hold you back from doing what you believe in.

I’m a saxophonist. My mother spent most of my school years paying for lessons on a variety of instruments determined I will one day accomplish at least one of them. From the guitar to the violin, I remember practising the piano, I could play my right hand well and my left hand fine, but playing them together was a catastrophe. However, when I picked up the saxophone, it just clicked. Within two years I got to grade 5. I have taken a break from grading as the lessons are expensive but I play by ear and I jam in my room to instrumentals and backing tracks, remixing current songs for leisure. One day I will complete the rest of the grades to satisfy my mum and myself.

Why do you want to be the next Star in a Bra?

I would love to be the next Star in a Bra as it would be a perfect way to continue to inspire women as it has inspired me! I think it’s so important for women of all ages to love themselves inside and out. I know what it’s like to not be confident in my own body and I understand the frustration that girls and women feel with so much pressure to look a certain way and to fit a certain mold but I am learning to love the things about myself that make me different and I would love to show other girls and women that uniqueness is something to embrace!

Have you always been happy with your body?

I haven’t always felt comfortable with the figure I have. I remember I went through a stage when I wore baggy clothes to hide my body. I’ve always had bigger boobs and a curvier figure than the average girl and for a while I didn’t know how to embrace it. As I get older, bit by bit I am becoming a lot more comfortable with who I am.

Has anyone else ever made you feel unhappy with your body?

Yes, I have always had little comments said to me now and then. At one point comments did upset me and I internalised them but as I’ve grown to appreciate and like my body, those comments hold no power over me anymore!

What makes you feel most confident?

I feel most confident when I have just been to the gym and had a good workout, I make sure I go a few times a week. It’s like a stress reliever for me and always makes me feel good about myself. I also feel most confident when I’m wearing good fitting lingerie and clothes. Too often I see so many things I’d love to wear but when I try it on it just doesn’t suit my shape so when I do have on something that fits really well and compliments my figure it definitely does a lot for my confidence.

Why did you enter Star in a Bra?

I entered Star in a Bra because I love what Star in a Bra stands for and what it does for women. To be a part of such an amazing brand would be a dream! I love the range of Curvy Kate lingerie and swimwear. I used to hate shopping for bras, it has always been something I try to avoid as I just end up disappointed but Curvy Kate is a reliable brand where there’s something for everyone! I have also followed the competition for a few years. I wanted to enter 2 years ago but I didn’t feel confident enough in myself so I put it off. Last year I felt like I was ready to enter but the age requirement had gone up as it was a worldwide competition so when I found out it was a UK one this year I knew I had to enter!

What did you enjoy about the photoshoot?

I loved every minute of it! I was really nervous at first but every one made me feel so welcome and comfortable really quickly. I loved getting my make-up done by Sara and then trying on the different Curvy Kate sets, even the food was amazing! Being amongst like-minded people on the day was a really nice feeling, all the other girls I met were so lovely! Getting my photos taken by Gavin was surreal, I think that could possibly be my favourite part of the day. With all the anticipation leading up to it, it lived up to my expectations and more! It was so nice working with him, I learnt so much in just a few hours. I won’t forget that day, I had the best time!

Giorgia 4

Explain your #somuchmoretome sign

When I started at Nottingham Trent University I tried out for the cheerleading team and got a spot on the competitive squad. I was a competitive cheerleader for there 1 year due to me leaving university as I quickly found out it wasn’t for me but I had to stay till the end of the year.  Cheerleading or Nottingham Trent Tigers was the one thing that got me through it and it did so much more for me than you can imagine. I learnt so much about myself, it changed me for the better in a lot of ways. We went on to become ICC National and Grand National Champions!
All the girls on the team came in completely different shapes and sizes but every single one of us was there because we had an important role to play within the team and it had nothing to do with the size of our legs or stomach. I think that is when I realised myself that ‘Fit’ and ‘healthy’ looks different on everyone and that’s something I always try to remember.
And if there is one thing I have done, (apart from becoming a Star in a Bra Finalist!) becoming a National Champion Cheerleader is what I’m most proud of! I became a healthier and fitter version of me, both physically and mentally. I pushed myself and worked so hard and it made me realise that when you want something bad enough, you can get it!

Have you always wanted to be a model?

From the age of about 16, yes! I remember writing it down as one of the things I wanted to achieve and now it’s weird to think it could be becoming a reality!
I think that’s the age when I started seeing more women who had similar body types and shapes to me becoming more prominent in the modelling world and that definitely inspired me!

What message would you like others to know about you?

I am still discovering a lot about myself, I don’t think that ever stops. I try to be honest about myself and not deny who I am, which is one thing I’ve grown to know is important. I have learnt to not wish I was the same as anyone else and to stop comparing, which is what I would love to help others do. It’s about being happy and healthy in your own body! Having a healthy mind is just as important as having a healthy body, it’s all about how you feel on the inside. And when you FEEL beautiful, it shows on the outside too!

What a babe!

Why do you want to be the next Star in a Bra?

Curvy Kate is a brand I admire for their diversity in models. They are doing such a good job at pulling this industry in the right direction. Today there are so many gorgeous plus size models who are showing the world that curvier bodies are beautiful too, and that is wonderful, but I still believe there is a gap in the industry that needs to be filled for people who fall in between straight size and plus size. I would love for everyone to feel like their body is beautiful and normal, no matter their size. Being the next Star in a Bra would give me an opportunity to promote more diversity in the modeling industry and that would mean the world to me.

Curvy Kate Sunday1-2111

Martine wearing the seductive Surrender Set.

Have you always been happy with your body?

No, growing up I never identified with any of the models you would see in the magazines and automatically thought “There must be something wrong with my body since it doesn’t look like that”. I spent a lot of years feeling insecure about my body, feeling guilty if I ate a piece of chocolate or feeling I had failed if I skipped a workout. It was an exhausting way to live. Now I am at a place where I eat healthy most of the time and exercise because it makes me feel strong and confident, but I also enjoy that piece of chocolate when I feel like it and I allow myself to skip the gym if I am not feeling up for it that day.

What are you most proud of?

Can I say that I am proud of this? I am so proud that I have come so far in accepting, loving and embracing my body that I am comfortable modeling underwear and sharing it with the world. I would never have had the confidence to do this five years ago.

Tell us about a time you are proud to have overcome?

I lost my mother when I was 19. We had a very close relationship and she is the person that has given me the most confidence throughout my life. I still carry her support and love with me and always think about what advice she would have given me in situations where I doubt myself.

Have you ever modelled before? What do you think about the industry?

I have done a few test shoots and have enjoyed that very much, but getting work in the modeling industry is hard when you are in between a straight size and a plus size. Technically I am defined as plus-size in the industry, but the girls who get the plus size work are often a few sizes bigger than me.

What makes you feel most confident?

I feel very confident in a nice outfit with good make up and hair, but I can also feel confident when I run that extra mile at the gym or when I’m lying on the couch with my boyfriend with no make up on and he says something nice to me. I think it is really about finding a bit of confidence in every situation.

Why did you enter Star in a Bra?

Since I only moved to the UK last year I wasn’t really familiar with the competition, but I followed Curvy Kate on Instagram and loved their bras. Right before the entries were about to close I saw their post about Star in a Bra and I decided to give it a go. Only later did I realize what a huge deal this is and now I am so happy that I applied and to have gotten this far!

What did you enjoy about the photoshoot?

The whole day was amazing! I was a bit nervous at first, but everyone was so nice, the other girls were lovely and the photographer was so good at giving directions that the time just flew by. I had so much fun shooting and all the sets I got to model were gorgeous, I felt so confident wearing them.

Martine 4

Here Martine wears the brand new Smoothie Deluxe.

Explain your #somuchmoretome sign:

I put “I am an engineer” on my sign because I wanted to bring attention to the problem we have with stereotypes when it comes to careers. I wanted to show that you can model underwear and love science at the same time. I wanted to break the stereotype that models are superficial and not very smart, and that girls in engineering don’t care about how they look or aren’t very feminine. I love fashion and make up, but I’m also really good at math, and that is OK!

Have you always wanted to be a model?

Growing up it never even seemed like a possibility to me. I have never been very skinny no matter how healthy I ate or how active I was, and back then you would never see curvier girls in magazines or in commercials. It was not until recently when I discovered all these amazing, confident and curvy girls like Iskra Lawrence, Robyn Lawley, Ashley Graham and so many more, that I realized it was even possible for someone like me to be a model. Following their journeys has somehow made me love and appreciate my body even more, and being a part of changing this industry into one that includes every shape and size of body is something I would love to do.

What message would you like others to know about you?

I genuinely want to promote diversity and body positivity. Growing up as a curvy girl with red hair and freckles I have not always been confident, but as I grew older I learned to love myself and to appreciate my body just the way it is. I would love for everyone to experience the same feeling of embracing yourself and understanding that you are perfect just the way you are!

Why do you want to be the next Star in a Bra?

I want to be the next star in a bra because I think I’d be a good advert for the company, I have the curves and I’m confident about them. We need to spread the body confidence amongst women. Curvy Kate underwear is amazing, it’s definitely underwear which makes me feel good and sexy. All women deserve to feel this way.

Curvy Kate Saturday part2-2180

Rebecca Looking Gorgeous in Ellace Latte.

Have you always been happy with your body?

No, I’ve felt unhappy with my body for as long as I can remember. Growing up I wasn’t slim like my friends so I was always very conscious about my curves. It also didn’t help having very thin celebrities on every magazine and in every ad campaign. Even just a few years ago when I was in my teens, curvy models were very rarely seen. I just love how these days there are curvy models advertising huge brands, it genuinely makes me feel more comfortable with myself.

I do remember one time in particular, I used to play netball in the school team, we had another school come to us to play a match and after we played I heard some of the girls referring to me as the “fat one”, at the time I was devastated however, I had to think it wasn’t my friends calling me names, maybe those girls were jealous of my netball skills 😉

What are you most proud of?

In all honesty, I’m most proud of getting this far in the competition. I was in complete shock to find out I’d made the top 10! I don’t know why I doubted myself so much!

Tell us about a time you are proud to have overcome?

When I was younger I lost my job and at the same time a relationship I was in broke down. I was in debt and obviously I was heartbroken too. I’m very lucky to have an amazing family so I moved home to help save money, I didn’t waste any time in looking for a new job and I soon realised that the tears cried over the relationship were totally not worth it! You live and learn!

Have you ever modelled before?

I haven’t modelled before so I can’t comment on how the industry works, although anyone can see how the modelling world is changing and is becoming more accepting of all the ladies who have some boobs, bums and hips to show off.

What makes you feel most confident?

My confidence is highest when I’m at work to be honest. I work part time in a restaurant waitressing which is something I’ve been doing for over 10 years now. I love talking and having a laugh and I also know I’m pretty good at my job too which makes me feel good. I always look forward to a busy night running round chatting to everyone, it never really seems like work.

Why did you enter Star in a Bra?

I entered star in a bra because I genuinely think this is something I can do. I feel more confident about my body now than I ever have, I spend far less time worrying about what people think and I’m learning to love all my wobbly bits. As I’ve gotten older I’ve realised life is far too short, we need to spend more time enjoying life and less time worrying about being a size zero. I’m older and (a bit) wiser as they say!

Rebecca 5

Rebecca wears the scandalous Peek-a-Boo.

Explain your #somuchmoretome sign:

I play hockey for a local team called Broadland. Sometimes people are a bit shocked by this because when I go out with my friends I’m always very girly, I don’t think people can imagine me with my hair tied back, no make up on and getting sweaty and competitive on a hockey pitch.

What did you enjoy about the photoshoot?

I loved meeting all the girls and all the team. It was such a relaxed atmosphere. It’s never going to be easy stripping down to your undies in front of complete strangers but everyone made me feel so comfortable. Of course I also enjoyed having my hair and make up done, everyone loves a bit of glam.

Have you always wanted to be a model?

I’ve always loved the idea of being a model. I think it’s one of those things girls quite often sit and dream about, I know I have! I never used to think it could actually become reality until now though. It’s all very exciting!

Yes it is! We can’t wait to see who will be crowned the winner of this year’s Star in a Bra, good luck to Rebecca and all the other girls.

Next up we have Martine Borgen Haugland….

Why do you want to be the next Star in a Bra?

I want to be the next Star in a Bra because I love when I flick through magazines or look online and see girls who I can relate too. Girls, who have boobs, have hips and a tummy looking fabulous and leading the way in a new fashion world. These girls have unwittingly given me confidence and the courage to love my body and feel confident just the way I am, and if I could do the same for at least one girl it would be an amazing achievement.

Curvy Kate Saturday-3681

Vivienne in our everyday fave – Daily Dream.

Have you always been happy with your body?

Growing up in a media focused society, it can sometimes be daunting when you are presented with one set image of how you should look, which if you don’t match can end up leaving you feeling unhappy, which is what happened to me and effected the way I personally viewed my body. I feel that there is currently a media change and they are now beginning to embrace all body shapes and curves, through the help of big star such as the Kardashians, Beyoncé, Kate Upton and Ashley graham to name a few, which gives girls like me more body confidence on a daily basis.

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my university degree, which I worked really hard for. In 2013 I graduated from the University of Bedfordshire with a First Class in BA Hons Public Relations and was awarded Marketing Student of the Year.

Tell us about a time you are proud to have overcome?

This year I took part in the ITV dating show Take Me Out and was lucky enough to in the words of Paddy, “Get me’self a date!” It was an amazing experience, but it unfortunately attracted a lot of negative online criticism and diverted away from the show and became more personal and body image related. After the show it made me question myself and my figure and whether I should change myself based on others opinions. Luckily I have very supportive family and friends who were there to pick me back up and give me sound words of advice and didn’t let such a small negative part of my experience ruin the whole thing.

Have you ever modelled before?

I’ve never modelled before, so this is a whole new experience for me, which I am taking full advantage of and cherishing every second of.

What makes you feel most confident?

I feel most confident when I’m on holiday, sitting poolside in a bikini with a cool drink, the sun beating down whilst I read A Game of Thrones (I’m obsessed) and I have a nice golden tan. Perrrfect!

Why did you enter Star in a Bra?

I love Curvy Kate’s ethos and the way they celebrate women’s curves. I love to see women with similar bodies to myself being so confident and looking beautiful. I entered Star in a Bra, because the Curvy Kate models give me inspiration and confidence and I would like to the do the same for someone else.

What did you enjoy about the photoshoot?

Well to start with everything, how could you not enjoy a day like that, starting off the day in a hair and makeup chair, letting professionals work their magic on you?! For me the best part of the photoshoot was getting to wear some amazing lingerie and being part of an actual photoshoot and being made to feel like a star alongside all the other gorgeous entrants! All the Curvy Kate team at the shoot were so friendly and supportive and made the day even more magical and were so good at putting everyone at ease to get the best photos out of them.

Vivienne 4

Vivienne Looking beaut in Florence Blue

Explain your #somuchmoretome sign:

I live and breathe football. This pretty much sums me up, I watch all levels of football when it’s on and find the close season such a long period. There’s nothing more I enjoy than a Saturday evening chilling on the sofa, feet up with a takeaway and watching Match of the Day.

Have you always wanted to be a model?

Like most young girls it has always been something I wished could happen to me, but has always been something which I thought was out of reach. Star in a Bra has made me see that this dream is well and truly possible.

What message would you like others to know about you?

I would like others to know that I am A Game of Thrones, football loving geek. I believe in never giving up on your dreams and working hard to achieve them. My 12 year old self would never have believed I’d be in the final 10 of a Star in a Bra competition when over 2000 girls entered. No dream is too big.

Full name:

Why do you want to be the next star in bra?

I want to get back into modelling again; it’s such an amazing opportunity so I had to take it. I started modelling when I was 16 and I did shoots for makeup and hair and then I moved on to doing music videos. I quit after a couple of years as I wanted a break from it, I got a boyfriend but now I’m ready to try again.

Curvy Kate Sunday1-572

Diana in our jazzy new Daily Dream Blue Mix.

Have you ever modelled before?

I always wanted to be known, or famous as I think you then have more of a platform and audience to help people. I always wanted to inspire women. Since I was little I’ve wanted to own my own clothing like for curvy and plus-size women, and I want to inspire women and men to be confident within themselves.

Have you always been happy with your body?

Yes. I’ve never been unhappy. I believe there are different stages in your life, I’m not going to be sad about the way I look because if I want to change it I can change it anytime. I’m confident in what I am at the moment because I think you have to be. You’ve just got to own it.

Has anyone else ever made you feel unhappy with your body?

Yes, when I was doing the modelling and was at college, in the first year people bullied me. They called me fat and ugly. I went to college thinking people would be grown up and passed the petty name-calling that usually happens in primary school but I was wrong. I even had a girl pull a knife out on me and threaten that she ‘would see me after school’, it really hurt me and everyday I’d go home and be upset about it but I tried not to let it show. I’d lock away my feelings and try to ignore what they were saying. I’d always laugh in there face or smile, I’d never what to let them know that it was hurting me. It was a really hard year.

Why did you enter Star in a Bra?

I entered so I can show women that having big boobs and curves is not a bad thing, because some people do see them as a negative. I want to show them that they shouldn’t feel conscious and that that they look great the way they are, just like all the other girls in the competition.

What are you most proud of?

I’m really proud of my life. I feel I have a really lucky life, I never feel hard done by, I’m just proud of how I learnt from such a young age to be positive about anything that happens to me. My life might not be perfect but the fact that I can see it as perfect for me, that’s what I’m proud of.

Tell us about a time you are proud to have overcome.

The bullying. That time was really tough. I didn’t really speak to anyone about it, I kept it all bottled up inside. I still went to collage every day. I would occasionally cry to my mum and ask why when I was living my dream doing modelling and music videos would people be mean to me about it. It was the modelling they didn’t like. They’d tell me I wasn’t good enough to be doing it, but my retaliation was that they had obviously watched the video because they liked the music and that they must just be jealous. It was a massive learning curve, if I was going to pursue this as a job it was a life lesson as there are always going to be positive and negative people and it was sort of like a test to see if I can handle it. It made me much stronger, if I had to go back and do it again I would change anything because it taught me so much.

What makes you feel most confident?

I get stared at quite a lot when I walk down the street. I can’t really go anywhere without getting some sort of attention, from both males and females.  I take these as signs that they like something about me and that makes me feel good.

Why did you enjoy about the photo shoot?

I love how everyone was so friendly, it’s a very friendly, sort of like a family. We were all made to feel so comfortable. I also love the photographer, he made me laugh and made me smile and made me feel totally at ease. There was just no judgement from anyone, I didn’t feel like any of the girls were comparing themselves to anyone else which was great.

Diana 3

Looking lovely in Luxe!

Explain your somuchmoretome sign?

So beauty is my life. I’ve grown up surrounded by beauty and being in nail salons as my mum is a nail technician. I’m always around makeup artists and hair stylists and nail ladies and I got to learn so much and see how beauty treatments can make women feel great about themselves which I love. The fashion is good because it can change the way people feel about their bodies and I think both fashion and beauty encompass my life and show how I always want to bring the best out in people.

Have you ever modelled before?

Yeah I have, I did it because I was confident in my body but I haven’t always been that way. From about the age of 11-15 that when I started putting on weight and I wasn’t always confident in myself then because I was young and also in Hungary it isn’t the ‘ideal’ body type so I always felt a bit different from others and really uncomfortable in myself but then I thought, why don’t I try doing something different that’s a challenge and that could build my confidence so I entered into some plus-size modelling competitions. I learnt to love myself through doing that. Then I also went for castings for music videos as a dancer/model and got picked up for lots of those.

What message would you like to others to know about you?

I want people to know that if they see me on the street, or even on a website like curvykate.com and they think ‘Awww she’s pretty and I wish I had as much confidence as her” that it’s possible because I started where they were with my own confidence. You just need to look in the mirror and say ‘I can do this, I am beautiful’, and you will achieve because I’m proof that you can get there because I’m there now.

Why do you want to be the next Star in a Bra?

I’ve been in that place of hating my body, striving to be slimmer and thinking I’d be happier if I was and its exhausting. But I’ve come through to the other side of accepting myself, and being genuinely happy in my own skin. I believe that if you don’t have a problem with yourself and how you look – other people can’t have a problem with it either. It’s hard to get there – but if I could win this competition and influence even one woman to get to reach that stage it would mean the world to me.

And with all of the serious stuff aside, the lingerie is gorgeous & great quality and that’s really hard to come by when you have big boobs!

Seana 2

Showing off the lifting power of Luxe!

Have you always been happy with your body?

I absolutely hated my body growing up, I was always bigger and more awkward than my friends who were all gorgeous and petite. I had big everything – big freckles, big lips, big bum, big hips. And I hated all of it. It eased a bit when I became pregnant, I began to appreciate how amazing my body was. Then after I had the baby it came back with a bang. I was going through a lot at the time and when my son was a few months old my body just had enough. I became really sick and ended up in hospital for weeks with pneumonia and septicemia. I lost all of the weight I thought I wanted to lose, and guess what? I looked dreadful. That weight just didn’t suit my frame. Instead of obsessing about my weight I had to concentrate on getting back to full health. It was then that I began to appreciate my body instead of constantly putting myself down.

Has anyone else ever made you feel unhappy with your body?

Yes, lots of times. A couple of things stick out in my head and both are from when I was a teenager. Once I was walking down the street with my friends in my new cream Levi 501’s and thought I was great! Some guy was walking past and just shouted “Thunder thighs” in my face. I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me. Another time I was about 16, working in retail. A lot of the women I worked with were older and they were so lovely. But there was one who just did not like me. One day there were a few of us standing around, the shop was quiet. Next thing she just announced in front of everyone “GOD! Isn’t Séana just so BIG! Hahahahaha” One of the other ladies that worked with us told her that wasn’t nice and she said “I don’t mean she’s fat, I mean she’s just BIG all over”

I laughed it off but I was mortified and so hurt.

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my son and the person I’ve become since having him.

Tell us about a time you’ve overcome a challenge?

When I became pregnant it was made clear to me quite early on that if I went ahead with the pregnancy I would be doing so alone. So I decided to make that journey on my own. I’m so grateful that I was brave enough to do it but it was SO hard. I had lots of support from my family but even little things like choosing his name, choosing what school he would go to weighed so heavily on me. I also wasn’t prepared for how judgmental people were going to be, it doesn’t bother me now but when he was younger I used to get so angry, I mean – I’m the parent that’s here looking after my child! Why judge me like that?! I’m more at peace with the whole situation now, I don’t care what people think. My son has helped carve me into the person I am today. I became strong for him, I work hard for him and I am a better person because of him. I am fiercely protective of him, and him of me.

Have you ever modelled before?

I have modelled before and I really enjoy it. The industry is quite cut throat, you can be popular one minute and not the next. But I think once you remember what is important in your life (family, friends etc.) and remember that it’s a job at the end of the day then you will be able to deal with some of the fickleness that comes along with being a model.

I’ve always been treated well on the jobs that I’ve done. Most of the people I have worked with have been lovely. In the beginning I sometimes felt like the token chubby model, but that’s definitely changing now. I think more brands definitely want bigger models as opposed to feeling like they should be using one and it just being a box ticked.

One obstacle I have come against though, and one that I find frustrating, is that more often I’m not “big enough”. I feel like if I wanted to really compete for work I would need to either put on weight, or lose weight. I think there are huge strides being made in plus size modelling – but a lot of it is towards 16+ models. Which is great, but it leaves a large percentage of women who are a size 12-14 unrepresented.

What makes you feel most confident?

Little day to day things that make me feel confident are – Mascara & lip-gloss. Nice undies. A good fitting pair of jeans. And a good work out makes me feel great! In life one thing that has improved my confidence HUGELY is furthering my education.

Why did you enter Star in a Bra?

I entered because I really admire the brand and the way it celebrates women’s curves. Curvy Kate always use a diverse range of models which I think is so important for women because the brand becomes easier to relate to if you can see someone that’s a similar shape or size to you. I feel that has a huge impact on women and how they view their own bodies. I want to be part of something that doesn’t just say they want to see women of all sizes, but actively promotes women of all shapes and sizes. I believe Curvy Kate does that!

Seana 4

Séana looks perfect in Smoothie.

Explain your #somuchmoretome sign:

Above everything else my family & friends are the most important thing to me. They are my safe place, and I strive to be theirs. I really believe the relationships we form with people are what makes us – not what we earn or the things we have. Also I’m a really bad joke teller – I get this from my mum…. Don’t tell her I said that though!

What did you enjoy about the photoshoot?

I absolutely loved meeting the other girls and all of the CK team. I was made to feel so welcome. The team made me feel really comfortable during the shoot so any nerves I had going in were gone straight away. I loved wearing the lingerie sets because they fit perfectly so I felt good. I was so grateful that Gavin the photographer was so patient and gave great direction, I’m willing to bet that he got the best out of every girl there.

Have you always wanted to be a model?

No, it never crossed my mind when I was younger because I would never have believed I was good enough. It was only something I gradually worked towards when I became more confident in myself.

What message would you like others to know about you?

That I think life is hard enough without putting ourselves down, which makes me really passionate about how women are viewed, portrayed and how they view themselves.

Here we have the beautiful Georgia ready to tell all…

Full name:

I live in High Wycombe, I am from Buckinghamshire England

Bra size before shoot fitting:

Why do you want to be the next Star in a Bra?:

I want to be the next Star in a Bra because I want other curvy/big boobed women to know that there is lingerie out there for us, and not just any lingerie, but sexy, good quality lingerie! Also because I feel being the next Star in a Bra will be the next step for myself to feeling completely confident and at peace with my body, and helping other woman of all shapes to feel like that too

Curvy Kate Saturday part2-204

Georgia looks very classy in our classic Princess set.

Have you always been happy with your body?

No, not always. Throughout all of secondary school I was very conscious about my weight and how I looked. Purely because I think when you hit those dreaded teenage years, there’s so much more pressure to look good and have a slim body because that’s what you think the ‘boys will like’. And also I was always the chubbier one in my friendship group or in the family, so that made me feel unhappy at times.

Has anyone else ever made you feel unhappy with your body?

Yes, again during secondary school, a memory I’d vividly remember, I heard that people had been calling me names. So I tried to brush it off but then I heard it again, therefore I went to confront the people who were trying to be funny with their friends and they did try to justify themselves saying it was joke, but did admit to calling me names. It upset me so much that school day, but I overcame it by actually confronting them. It hurt but it made me feel better and made it easier for me to think ‘WHATEVER’, it’s just a silly name! Having supportive friends around helped too.

What are you most proud of?:

Overall, I would probably say going to uni. This is because I was terrified and had no idea what I wanted to do two years ago, and to think of all the things I have done within university where I’ve had to come way out of my comfort zone, makes me really proud. If it’s do with my body then: Wearing denim shorts in the UK! I would never ever wear shorts at all unless I was on holiday, even since a very early age because I hated my thighs so much. But last summer I embraced the weather and wore them!

Tell us about a time you are proud to have overcome:

So in my first year at uni I successfully got into the Advanced Street Dance Squad which was amazing. But it came down to deciding on our costumes for our competitions, and the choreographers had decided that the girls were to wear black leggings and a black crop top. I honestly could have died when they said that. The thought of dancing in front of people in a crop top with part of my stomach showing made me feel extremely anxious. However because I knew there was no way of getting round it, it’s as if I had to force myself to get over it, I did it. It felt a little uncomfortable at our first competition, but during the other two, I was so happy doing something that I love and enjoying life that I couldn’t have cared less about my stomach showing!

Have you ever modelled before?

I haven’t modelled professionally before so haven’t experienced that kind of industry, but recently I did get asked to model for a band for Notting Hill Carnival. The way they treated me was incredible, everyone was so upbeat, happy and chilled. Considering this was the first time I would have been in a two piece in front of strangers (apart from on holiday), I wouldn’t have wanted the vibes any different. They made me feel so comfortable, and for once no one cared what each other looked like.

What makes you feel most confident?:

Well apart from when you find an outfit that you feel like you look amazing in… I would have to say the people around me. I love positive vibes, and I’m lucky enough to have a lot of optimistic people around. Whether it’s me having an off day about how I look or when I’m trying to accomplish something within uni, the people around make me feel the most confident within myself, and enable me to bring out the best in me!

Why did you enter Star in a Bra:

If I’m totally honest, I had seen little bits about the competition on twitter but never thought to apply, until I got tagged in a tweet. I went on the website and had a read through, and it seemed like such a good opportunity! I have been getting more and more comfortable within my own skin and thought why not enter? I love lingerie, I love my curves and what a better way to show it than to enter the Curvy Kate competition.

Georgia 4

Looking delish is Ellace Latte.

Explain your #somuchmoretome sign:

I’ve always loved entertaining and dancing, but as a curvier girl I had the tendency to doubt myself and my dancing ability due to how I looked. Especially when it came to dancing within certain styles such as contemporary, I would think only smaller framed people look good dancing it. However I stuck to it, and didn’t quit. Anyone can dance, anyone. It doesn’t matter what you look like at all, you just have to break those boundaries and stereotypes!

What did you enjoy about the photoshoot?:

The atmosphere. It was so chilled and fun as soon as I came through the door the nerves completely disappeared. It was refreshing to not have anyone judge you especially seeing as we were all in lingerie! I also enjoyed being photographed by a professional too, the tips and tricks really helped and helped me to relax and enjoy the whole experience.

Have you always wanted to be a model?:

When I was a lot younger I used to model bridesmaid dresses for a bridal shop, but since then, no I never considered it until around a year ago.

What message would you like others to know about you?:

I want others to know that I’m bubbly and outgoing! I always try to make the mood brighter in a bad situation, whether that’s with my sarcastic sense of humour or silly faces. I love to do random things, like going to the aquarium or taking a drive, and also I love to help people. Especially when it’s do with body image because I feel in some way we can all relate to something, and if you’ve overcome not liking something about yourself, then share how you did it and help other people. At the end of the day I’ll always be me!

Here we have the lovely Selen telling all…

Full name:

Selen Alfuran

Age:

34

Occupation:

Health Care Assistant

I live in….I am from…

I live in South London but I was born in Turkey. I am half Turkish, half African. For the past 15 years I have lived in London.

Bra size before shoot fitting:

34GG

Bra size after shoot fitting:

32J

Why do you want to be the next star in bra?

I want to be the next star in a bra because Curvy Kate searching for a real life woman to be the new face and body of the brand. I always felt I was fat and ugly because I am not size zero,  but now I have overcome my body image issues and realise that I am the beautiful one, it is society who is ugly. I want to show the whole word that beauty has no size!

Curvy Kate Sunday1-1381

Selen looks like a dream in our new Daydreamer bra.

Have you always been happy with your body?

No, I always felt very aware of my body, especially with my breast size. I felt like my boobs were huge and I did try everything to make them look smaller. Finding a right size bra became my nightmare.

Has anyone else ever made you feel unhappy with your body?

I always struggled with my weight in my teen years. When I was a teenager most of my friends were quite slim. I was bullied at school because of my looks and the size of my breasts, especially in changing rooms. I didn’t overcome this so quick. It took a long time for me to feel that I am normal. But eventually I began to realise that I am lucky for having these fab, natural breasts without having any surgery! And they look absolutely gorgeous in dress!

What are you most proud of?

I had a hard time coming to terms with my racial identity as a kid and a teenager. I knew what I was, I knew what my parents were, but I did not know how I could be who I was without constantly having to explain myself. I would tell people, from time to time, that I was just white, or that I was just black, but no one quite believed me. I just wanted to be “normal” like most of my friends. But right now the fact that I am mixed-race makes me so proud. I am proud that I got the best of both worlds.

Tell us about a time you are proud to have overcome:

I guess my biggest adversity was living in Turkey. Because I am mixed race and don’t look typically ‘Turkish’, it was my biggest problem back then. Every time I went out and spoke Turkish, people always looked so surprised that I could speak it fluently. I always felt like a tourist in the country that I was born. You see there wasn’t really other mixed race people where I’m from at that time. I always felt I was born in wrong country, however when I moved to London, I felt blended in and accepted, it felt so right.

Selen 4

Explain your somuchmoretome sign?

I always wanted to do something that I can earn money and give something back same time. I work with vulnerable individuals to help them live their lives to the full. Being a health care assistant is most rewarding job. I want to take it to the next level this is why I am studying towards to my nursing career.

What makes you feel most confident?

I feel my most confident when I make myself proud. Whether that’s having a great day at work or finishing a workout I didn’t think I could do.

Why did you enjoy about the photo shoot?

As soon as I walked in to the studio everyone made me feel so welcome. I got to meet a variety of women, who were all different shapes and size, all beautiful women. I also loved my makeup, my skin looked polished and natural. When I met photographer Gavin, I was so nervous but he made me feel welcome and relaxed. He gave me tips how to pose and he talked me through everything during photo shoot.  I felt beautiful and sexy in Curvy Kate lingerie, I wish I could take all the sets away with me. I never felt so glamorous. It was one of the best days in my life.

Have you ever modelled before?

No, I never thought I had what it takes to be a model.

What message would you like to others to know about you?

I would encourage young women to wake up every day and point out the things that they love about themselves instead of comparing themselves to other women.

What a babe! Good luck to Selen in the rest of the competition! Next up we have Georgia Globe

I live in Angel Islington, North London. Originally from Finsbury Park (also Islington).

Bra size before shoot fitting:

Bra size after shoot fitting:

30H

Why do you want to be the next Star in a Bra?

I want to be the next star in a bra to not only represent curvy girls everywhere, but to also (help) represent all ethnicities and backgrounds as beauty has no shape or shade.

Have you always been happy with your body?

I was unhappy growing up as I was STICK thin, coming from a Caribbean background, where curves are celebrated, I didn’t feel womanly or confident at all until I started to put on weight in my early twenties.

What are you most proud of?

I am the most proud of my mum for raising us four children single-handedly. She managed to never have is want for anything growing up. She’s where I get my strength from no doubt.

Tell us about something that you are proud to have overcome:

Heartbreak! I’ll say no more. Haha!

What makes you feel most confident?

When I’ve just had my hair done and my nails and toenails are a matching colour!

Why did you enter Star in a Bra?

I entered because as a long time regular customer of Curvy Kate, I signed up to get email notifications and what not. I kept being emailed about this competition. I thought about it, but didn’t apply until I got home after a great night out with my chicks, very tipsy; I applied on my phone whilst in bed, passing out asleep shortly after. Then I got the email inviting me to the next stage and nearly fell off my chair at work. I thought it would be a fun and confidence boosting thing to do, never imagined I’d get this far.

What did you enjoy about the photoshoot?

The beautiful ladies I got to meet and realising that we were all super nervous, but supported and encouraged each other throughout the day. There was nothing but love in that room all day. I left feeling empowered and on a complete high.

Have you always wanted to be a model?

I’ve always admired models, especially plus size models coming through more recently and being celebrated. I was addicted to Britain and Americas next top model (the TV shows) growing up – I tried to “Smise” like Tyra Banks in the mirror all the time, but looked like an idiot. So I didn’t think it was ever possible for me at all. Those women were FRIGGIN beauts afterall!

Shonts 3

How amazing is this Dreamcatcher Pink set?!

Explain your #somuchmoretome sign:

Okay first of all, writing what I did on that sign was HUGELY emotional and really hard to do, as it’s not something I talk about or broadcast AT ALL. I had no idea that I would have cried writing a few words on a damn whiteboard but, I was asked to write about a difficult time that I’ve overcome and this was the most difficult that came to mind.

In 2014 I had lost a bit of weight but noticed that my stomach wasn’t moving. In fact it looked bigger. When I would lay down flat on my back there would be a prominent bump and there was ZERO chance of me being pregnant (need I say more). I was also having such evil periods so I went to the docs who told me that my uterus was the size of someone who was 4 months pregnant.

Long story short, scans confirmed that it was a fibroid (non-cancerous kind of tumour) that was buried in the wall of my womb and needed to come out. Being too big for key- hole surgery, I had to have an operation similar to a C-Section and was told there was a chance I could lose my womb altogether. I held down my emotions and worry for the sake of my family who were REALLY anxious about the whole thing, but behind closed doors I would worry, panic and sometimes cry, hoping that all would be fine because I really really want to be able to have children one day.

I’m so lucky that the surgery went well and I was back on my feet after a couple months of recovery. Also hugely lucky to have those in my life that supported and was there for me 1 million percent of the time. My surgeon was an angel and I can still have children (Whoop!) So I just feel hugely blessed, grateful and humbled by the experience; Which is why I got emotional talking about it in public for the first time.

What message would you like others to know about you?

I’d like them to know I’m an ordinary chick from North London. I’ve had to work hard for everything I have, living alone and putting myself through work and university with zero handouts since I was 18 years old. I’m not afraid of hard work. I believe anything and everything is possible if you want it enough.

What an inspirational message and a cool and confident lady Shortnay is! Good luck in the competition Shonts! Next up we have Selen Alfuran

Even our finalists make bra mistakes….make that 134.

This year’s Star in a Bra competition saw 35 curvy hopefuls take part in our live audition stages. It gave them the chance to flaunt their figures and perfected their poses but it also meant they could get properly bra fitted.

To make sure they’re looking their absolute best, we always want to fit the girls in Curvy Kate lingerie to make sure they have the perfect support to take the best picture possible. As you probably know, over 90% of women are in the incorrect bra size and our Star in a Bra girls were no exception! Out of 35 girls only 1 was wearing the correct size and the rest of them shifted a whopping 134 sizes between them…no we’re not joking!!

So after carting a large quantity of styles and sizes to each shoot (over 600!!!) we managed to get each and every girl into the feel good fit and to prove it here are the before and after pictures….

Rebecca Whitehall

Before shoot fitting: 28GG

570c0e14151c3-1460407828

After Shoot fitting size: 28H

Curvy Kate Thursday-1131ccccc

Rebecca was pretty much on the money when it came to her size however as different brands can fit differently I decided that it would be best to put her in a 28H- and doesn’t she look great for it?! That Dreamcatcher Magenta looks the bomb on her.

Netsai Dandajena

Before shoot fitting: 34F

5748c2e4e0534-1464386276

After Shoot fitting size: 32GG

Curvy Kate Thursday-1993

Netsai was wearing a 34 back when she arrived at the shoot but really she needed a smaller back size to make sure she was getting maximum support. Her Dreamcatcher Black really made the difference.

Sophie Walker

Before shoot fitting: 34G

56e716e7e8753-1457985255 (1)

After Shoot fitting size: 30H

Curvy Kate Thursday-2206

Sophie’s ribcage is teeny tiny so a 34 was much too big for her. We dropped her down two back sizes to her sister size for the perfect fit in Princess Blueberry.

Katie Sansom

Before shoot fitting: 34FF

5736494d3dd1c-1463175501

After Shoot fitting size: 32G

Curvy Kate Thursday-1880

Katie wasn’t far off but again to get the best support we dropped her down a back size and increased her cup size to her sister size. Daily Dream Blueberry is the perfect fit to help shape and support.

Denne Wilson

Before shoot fitting: 38G

57336099a8e58-1462984857

After Shoot fitting size: 32HH

Curvy Kate Thursday-2811

Wow! Denne was quite far off, wearing a back size that was 3 sizes too larger for her meant she wasn’t getting anywhere near the support she should be. Decreasing her back size and increasing her cup size meant she got her perfect size and she definitely looks the part in Scantilly’s Peek-a-boo.

Megan Field

Before shoot fitting: 28GG

574b073a4d375-1464534842

After Shoot fitting size: 28GG

Curvy Kate Thursday-1107

Woohoo!!! 🎉🎉🎉 Well done to Megan who came in the correct size! She’s wearing Daisie which is a classic plunge that every girl needs.

Vicky Stuart

Before shoot fitting: 38G

56d58767789e0-1456834407

After Shoot fitting size: 34H

Curvy Kate Thursday-2294

Vicky was another girl who was very close to her size as she was wearing her sister size, by dropping 2 back sizes and increasing two cup sizes she gets the same cup volume but with added support in the back. She’s wearing Daydreamer which due to the laminated cup give a great uplifted shape.

Seana Sweeney

Before shoot fitting: 32F

5727c86cc8962-1462225004

After Shoot fitting size: 30FF

Curvy Kate Thursday-1500

Ditto! Seana just needed to dare go a little tighter to make sure she got her perfect fit.

Deena O’Brien

Before shoot fitting: 36FF

574c54b62a978-1464620214

After Shoot fitting size: 32HH

Curvy Kate Thursday-3086

Same old story – Deena was in a too big back and a too small cup. We went down two back sizes and up four cup sizes to make sure all her breast tissue was contained. The Princess Blueberry provided the perfect support for her HH cups boobs.

Shorntay Allen

Before shoot fitting: 32GG

574dfe9d32964-1464729245

After Shoot fitting size: 30H

Curvy Kate Thursday-3280

By synching in the back band, Shorntay can now lift up her H cup puppies and just look at the colour of Dreamcatcher Magenta on her!! Phoarrrrr!! 🔥🔥🔥

Olivia Kate Larkman

Before shoot fitting: 32FF

574c9909bc570-1464637705

After Shoot fitting size: 30H

Curvy Kate Thursday-3342

Olivia was another girl who just needed to try a slightly tighter band, that and a couple of cup sizes larger and we’ve got super perky boobs! Oh and hi no straps! The Luxe is a miracle worker! 🌟🌟🌟

Lauren Swanick

Before shoot fitting: 36E

574ca30122078-1464640257

After Shoot fitting size: 30J

Curvy Kate Saturday part2-2217

Lauren was our most drastic change, arriving to see us at her fitting wearing a 36E which was attempting to hold up her 30J chest. We tightened up the back band and increased numerous cups sizes, resulting in a 12 size change! Lauren looked amazing when she’d found her perfect fit in Florence Blue.

Kellsey Thomas

Before shoot fitting: 32GG

5708275b5f298-1460152155

After Shoot fitting size: 30H

Curvy Kate Saturday part2-505

Kellsey was another one back down, one cup up girl. So close! Princess Blueberry was a winner for her!

Rebecca Penfold

Before shoot fitting: 32F

56e6ff9b1bb33-1457979291

After Shoot fitting size: 28FF

Curvy Kate Saturday part2-1289

Rebecca was another one who was guilty of thinking her ribcage was bigger. She’s so petite that she definitely needs a 28″ back! Peek-a-Boo was perfect for keeping her curves in check.

Alexandra Rogers

Before shoot fitting: 34DD

574acf78d4c65-1464520568

After Shoot fitting size: 32F

Curvy Kate Saturday part2-1699

Alex was hit with the curse of the “34DD” – One of the most popular sizes bought but it’s often never the correct size. We decreased her back size and increased her cup and Smoothie Deluxe now fits her perfectly.

Jessica Tremlett

Before shoot fitting: 32DD

5746fcff89292-1464270079 (1)

After Shoot fitting size: 30E

Curvy Kate Saturday part2-918

This Jess, another petite little lady opting for a too-big back size. If in doubt go down a back size and up and cup and see what happens!

Lauren Sheppard

Before shoot fitting: 34G

56d5b322c4c4b-1456845602 (1)

After Shoot fitting size: 32GG

Curvy Kate Saturday part2-2551

Lauren dropped a back size and gained a cup size and her boobs are never looked better… especially is Scantilly’s sexy Surrender.

Rebecca Savory

Before shoot fitting: 30GG

574d95f596db3-1464702453

After Shoot fitting size: 32H

Curvy Kate Saturday part2-2170

Rebecca’s boobs were larger that she thought so we increased the back size this time so the cups sat more comfortably and then increased the cup size too. Ellace fit her ‘full-on-top’ boobs like a like a dream due to the stretch top cup.

Jess Gregory

Before shoot fitting: 38E

5744b54738c2a-1464120647

After Shoot fitting size: 32H

Curvy Kate Saturday part2-720

Jess chnaged size by a whopping 8 sizes! Guilty of thinking her back was wider than it was she opted for a 38, however she was much closer to a 32. She also gain a couple of cup sizes or 6. Jess is rocking Dreamcatcher Magenta and showing off her new pert boobs!

Georgia Globe

Before shoot fitting: 34DD

56fd5667ebd96-1459443303

After Shoot fitting size: 30FF

Curvy Kate Saturday part2-124

Another cursed by the 34DD! It’s one of the most readily available sizes and what the majority of the female population of the UK believe they are however most of the time this is incorrect. Georgia is more like a 30FF and the Florence bra she’s wearing fits to perfection.

Natalie Juliet Deadman

Before shoot fitting: 34F

570809a0320af-1460144544

After Shoot fitting size: 32GG

Curvy Kate Saturday part2-1184

Natalie was not too far off the mark however her ribcage is very small so she needed a smaller back and bigger cup. We opted for Daily Dream and the foam-lined cup adds structure and shape to a soft tissue bust.

Kelly Pepper

Before shoot fitting: 34DD

570bbdc06eb8e-1460387264

After Shoot fitting size: 30FF

Curvy Kate Saturday part2-068

Tut tut. Another 34DD…what are we going to do with them?! We’ll get them in the correct bra of course! Kelly was the typical story that she was smaller in the back and bigger in the cup than she originally thought.

Vivienne Long

Before shoot fitting: 34E

573aeee51c5cf-1463480037

After Shoot fitting size: 30GG

Curvy Kate Saturday-3677

Vivienne Long you are not a 34! You’re ribcage is teeny and your boobs need proper support. Try the Daily Dream Black like Viv to get amazing support and shaping.

Emma Knight

Before shoot fitting: 40F

56d76a926405f-1456958098

After Shoot fitting size: 34H

Curvy Kate Sunday1-850

Emma made the same mistake that so many women before her have, she believed that her back width was much wider than it actually was. She fit a 34 perfectly which really helps to lift and shape her boobs.

Susana M Apostolova

Before shoot fitting: 32G

56da3ffb428d9-1457143803 (1)

After Shoot fitting size: 30G

Curvy Kate Sunday1-2763

Susan was so close, we just tightened the back band to make sure she was secure. Check out how great our Luxe Strapless looks on her!

Charlotte Sweeting

Before shoot fitting: 34F

570fe94e503aa-1460660558

After Shoot fitting size: 30G

Curvy Kate Sunday1-524

This petite little lady just needed to find her sister size. Her cup volume was correct but she needed to tighten her back for maximum support.

Giorgia Mullard

Before shoot fitting: 34GG

57391cec895b4-1463360748

After Shoot fitting size: 30H

Curvy Kate Sunday1-1260

Giorgia has such a minute waist there was no way on earth she would measure a 34″. So we go her in a 30 and a H cup and her boobs looked AMAZING.

Carla Moreno

Before shoot fitting: 34DD

5740beb43ef0b-1463860916

After Shoot fitting size: 30FF

Curvy Kate Sunday1-1201

Oh hi 34DD! Another victim to the curse! If you’re wearing a 34 back and you’re bewteen a size 8 -12 then the likelihood is you’re in the wrong size. Carla shows us her how fab a correctly fitting bra can look in Smoothie Blush.

Rochelle Francis

Before shoot fitting: 34FF

5742199e51210-1463949726

After Shoot fitting size: 32G

Curvy Kate Sunday1-2154

Rochelle was another sister size girl, all she needed was a back size down and a cup size up and hey presto, perfect boobs in Florence Blue.

Selen Alfuran

Before shoot fitting: 34GG

574323204769f-1464017696

After Shoot fitting size: 32J

Curvy Kate Sunday1-935

Selen was falling short as she wasn’t chosing cups that encased all her breast, the wires won’t large enough so they weren’t covering and supporting her. We opted for 2/3 cup sizes larger and Dreamcatcher worked like a charm.

Citele Kotecha

Before shoot fitting: 36G

574c6b1615de5-1464625942

Citele just need to tighten up her back band and increase her cup size accordingly. 36G fit in the cups but she just needed a bit more support from her back band.

A 30 back fit Martine much more comfortably and the extra room in the cups meant her new Smoothie Deluxe gave her the ‘feel good fit’.

Kristija Braunfelde

Before shoot fitting: 44E

krista

After Shoot fitting size: 34GG

Curvy Kate Sunday1-2652

Kristija was another one of our drastic changers. Wearing a back band 10 inches too big meant she was getting zero support. We fit her in a 34GG which was a whopping 10 sizes difference to what she started out as! I bet she’s loving her new perky boobs and sexy Surrender set.

Mila Stojanovic

Before shoot fitting: 32H

574dfa555842b-1464728149

After Shoot fitting size: 32HH

Curvy Kate Sunday1-1829

Mila was very close to her perfect size. We found when we tried her in sizes that she could wear either a 32H or 32HH and Curvy Kate’s bras fit best in HH. This Ellace Latte set was the perfect compromise and the stretch-top cups meant then mould to your shape.

Danielle Nash

Before shoot fitting: 36F

574dd6dbf2bf0-1464719067

After Shoot fitting size: 32H

Curvy Kate Sunday1-2810

Danielle experieced a pretty drastic change as she believed she’d “never ever fit into a 32″ but here’s the proof and does she look perfection in our Daily Dream Blueberry??

Diana Sirokai

Before shoot fitting: 36D

573d8947113c9-1463650631

After Shoot fitting size: 34G

Curvy Kate Sunday1-566

Diana was wearing a cup size that didn’t do her ample chest justice. A D-cup couldn’t hold those puppies! We got Diana in a 34G which fit her like a dream!

So there we have it, out of top 35 of our girls only 1/2 were wearing the correct size! It just goes to show that majority of women are still in the wrong size even if they think they aren’t. So here’s a reminder ladies – Go get fitted ever 6 months and make sure you’re giving your lady lumps the best support you can!

If you want to find out more about fitting then having a read of our Fitting Guide post and Scoop and Swoop posts as they will definitely help.

Have you had a fitting recently? Did your size change and by how much? Let us know on Twitter as we’d love to hear from you!

Is your bra harming you?

Bras are items of clothing that women all over the world wear every single day, but could they really be doing you serious damage?

After reading an article in The Daily Mail today, I can see why some women may believe that the bra is the culprit – however as I’m part of a lingerie brand, I wanted to dig a little deeper.

The article tells the story of three women who have all found that wearing a bra has caused or aggravated a health problem. They spoke of lumps being caused by underwires, skin conditions being irritated by back bands and of back pain and discomfort so severe that one of the women was considering a breast reduction. So pretty serious stuff!

All of these issues should be taken seriously however, I want to discuss the reasons why bras might irritate or be the cause of these problems. I also want to talk of the alternatives these women have, or even how these problems can be cured with the simple solution of trying a different size…

Pain and Discomfort:

The most common problem, I feel, is the discomfort. The Daily Mail spoke with a lady who is so uncomfortable in her bras that she is considering breast reduction surgery. Now I’d love to say that this level of discomfort from a bra is really uncommon but it isn’t, many women experience it – but do you know what? I have a secret for you… It isn’t always the bra and it’s more than likely the bra size.

As you all know, over 80% (I think it’s closer to 95%) of women are STILL in the wrong bra size. The lady who took part in the article says she is a 42E but looks much closer, in my professional opinion, to a 34G/GG. She has a very narrow ribcage and a full bust so should be opting for a smaller back band and bigger cup to get the best support.

She described wearing her bra – “when I’m out and about, I constantly have to lift the straps from my shoulders for a few seconds at a time to relieve the pressure, and pull the join in the cups away from my breastbone for the same reason.”

When you hear this it sounds pretty horrific, but I’ve put together a diagram below to show what happens when you wear a back band that is too large.

Bra Damaging Image

The back band should hold 80% of the weight of your breasts and to do that it needs to be firm. If it’s not it means the weight of your breasts can pull down into the cups, pulling on the straps and then lifting your back band up. No wonder the lady in the article has to keep lifting her straps! She is essentially carrying the entire weight of her breasts on her shoulders. It also means that this weight drives the ill-fitting wires into her breastbone… which let’s be honest must be pretty uncomfortable.

This theory makes the next statement from the article make so much sense… “Dr Perera says bras can lead to a host of problems, as they can put pressure on your trapezius (the large, triangular-shaped muscles that cover most of the back and the posterior of the neck), causing tension and stiffness. ‘This can leave you with pain in your neck and shoulders, and lead to headaches,’ she says.”

A paper from Portsmouth University on research into Breast Health outlined that a poorly fitting bra can have the following effects on your health:

  • Breast Pain
  • Poor Support
  • Poor Posture (force created by weight of breasts can pull trunk, head and neck forwards)
  • Upper body musculoskeletal problems (back, neck and shoulder pain)
  • Deep furrows in the shoulders caused by excessive strap pressure.

Finding a bra that fits and supports you correctly can alleviate symptoms. Yes, some bras may cause or aggravate health problems however an ill-fitting bra might be one of the biggest contributors.

We speak with many fuller-busted women, wearing the correct size, who couldn’t live without their trusty bras. In the correct size, a bra can:

  • Increased Support including less shoulder and back pain.
  • Improved posture
  • Better breast shape
  • Increased confidence
  • Clothing fitting better

Everyone is individual and should get to know their own body and what works for them.

Cysts and Lumps:

Next up: cysts and lumps. A woman in the article found a lump under her arm. She feared the worst, but when the doctor investigated he said “it had been caused by the wire squeezing the flesh upwards, compressing the tissue and causing a blockage.” This sound pretty serious and something that definitely shouldn’t be taken lightly.

However, bear in mind that wires shouldn’t ever sit on breast tissue, they shouldn’t dig into breast tissue and they certainly shouldn’t be ‘compressing’ or ‘squeezing’ breast tissue. Wires should completely encase your breasts and the cups should be large enough that no tissue is trapped.

Some women are prone to cysts and if you’re one of them, then wire-free bras may be the best option for you. Remember, it’s about finding what works for you, your boobs and your body! There are plenty of alternatives out there, including non-wired bras, crop tops and sports bras.

*Remember* – As supporters of CoppaFeel! Curvy Kate encourages everyone to check their boobs regularly and get to know what normal feels like. If you feel anything ‘abnormal’ or unusual, make sure you see your doctor. If in doubt, check it out.

Skin Conditions:

Lastly the article spoke of a lady who suffers from a skin condition called Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), “which causes abscesses and scarring around her breasts and in her armpits.” The condition prevents her from wearing a bra as she finds it too uncomfortable.

It sounds like this condition is obviously very painful and hard to live with, however the article does say that it is rare. HS isn’t directly caused by wearing a bra but a bra will aggravate the symptoms which just goes to prove that bras can’t work for everyone. As I’ve said previously it’s about finding what works for you and your boobs. All bodies are different and I don’t think we can suggest they will all react the same way.

So overall, the majority of women won’t experience symptoms caused by wearing a bra, other than the positive ones that our customers regularly report back to us. It seems a big statement to say that every single woman should stop wearing a bra for health reasons. A lot of the time they really help women by supporting their breasts, and helping to make living with a fuller bust easier and much  more comfortable.

Hurray for the bra!!!

There is #SoMuchMoreToMe

As you know our #SIABlive audition stages included a wide range of beautiful women, all of which were very different and had a lot to offer, but this didn’t just stop at their looks.

Even though Star in a Bra is fundamentally a modelling competition and is mostly based on physical appearance, we like to chose girls who with think fit in with the Curvy Kate mentality and share a similar outlook on life. We like to share who they are on the inside as well as the outside, so this year we wanted them to tell us something about themselves that you wouldn’t necessarily know just from looking at them. That’s why we came up with the hashtag #SoMuchMoreToMe as we wanted to show the world that the girls are more than just a pretty face and enviable body, they have stories, achievements and brilliant minds. So here are our Top 10 girls tell you that there is #SoMuchMoreToMe….

1) Martine Borgen Haugland

Martine 4

When asked about her sign Martina said, “I put “I am an engineer” on my sign because I wanted to bring attention to the problem we have with stereotypes when it comes to careers. I wanted to show that you can model underwear and love science at the same time. I wanted to break the stereotype that models are superficial and not very smart, and that girls in engineering don’t care about how they look or aren’t very feminine. I love fashion and make up, but I’m also really good at math, and that is OK!”

2) Rebecca Savory

Rebecca 5

When asked about her sign Rebecca said “I play hockey for a local team called Broadland. Sometimes people are a bit shocked by this because when I go out with my friends I’m always very girly, I don’t think people can imagine me with my hair tied back, no make up on and getting sweaty and competitive on a hockey pitch.”

3) Seana Sweeney

Seana 4

Don’t tell her I said that though!”

5) Shorntay Odell Allen

Shorntay 3

When asked about her sign Shorntay said, “Okay first of all, writing what I did on that sign was HUGELY emotional and really hard to do, as it’s not something I talk about or broadcast AT ALL.

Being too big for key- hole surgery, I had to have an operation similar to a C Section and was told there was a chance I could lose my womb altogether.

Also hugely lucky to have those in my life that supported and was there for me 1million percent of the time. My surgeon was an angel and I can still have children (Whoop!) So I just feel hugely blessed, grateful and humbled by the experience; Which is why I got emotional talking about it in public for the first time.”

6) Vivienne Long

Vivienne 4

When asked about her sign Vivienne said, “I live and breathe football. This pretty much sums me up, I watch all levels of football when it’s on and find the close season such a long period. There’s nothing more I enjoy than a Saturday evening chilling on the sofa, feet up with a takeaway and watching Match of the Day.”

7) Danielle Nash

Danielle 5

When asked about her sign Danielle said, “I’m a saxophonist. One day I will complete the rest of the grades to satisfy my mum and myself.”

8) Diana Sirokai

Diana 3

When asked about her sign Diana said “So beauty is my life. I’ve grown up surrounded by beauty and being in nail salons as my mum is a nail technician. I always around makeup artists and hair stylists and nail ladies and I got to learn so much and see how beauty treatments can make women feel great about themselves which I love. The fashion is good because it can change the way people feel about their bodies and I think both fashion and beauty encompass my life and show how I always want to bring the best out in people.”

If you want Diana to win Click Here.

9) Georgia Globe

Georgia 4

When asked about her sign Georgia said, “I’ve always loved entertaining and dancing, but as a curvier girl I had the tendency to doubt myself and my dancing ability due to how I looked. Especially when it came to dancing within certain styles such as contemporary, I would think only smaller framed people look good dancing it. However I stuck to it, and didn’t quit. Anyone can dance, anyone. It doesn’t matter what you look like at all, you just have to break those boundaries and stereotypes!”

10) Giorgia Mullard

Giorgia 4

When asked about her sign Giorgia said, “When I started University I tried out for the cheerleading team and got a spot on the competitive squad. I was a competitive cheerleader there only for 1 year as I left university as I quickly found out it wasn’t for me but I had to stay till the end of the year.  Cheerleading was the one thing that got me through it and it did so much more for me than you can imagine.

I pushed myself and worked so hard and it made me realise that when you want something bad enough, you can get it!”
